The Cincinnati Reds had to overcome a big game from Boston second baseman Red Schoendienst to leave Crosley Field with a victory. And they did, winning, 8-7. Schoendienst was 3-4 with 3 singles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. The defeat makes the Braves 5-10.

The decisive blow was delivered by Whitey Kurowski in the bottom of the ninth when he hit a run-scoring double off 41-year old right-handed pitcher Earl Caldwell to win the game for Cincinnati. The home crowd went nuts.

"He who laughs last laughs best," Kurowski said, postgame.
