With center fielder Johnny Wyrostek leading the charge, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 9-6, at Forbes Field. Wyrostek, who is tied for 5th in the NL with a .930 OPS, was 3-5 with a double and 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. The winning pitcher was Schoolboy Rowe. He's now 4-0. He went 8.1 innings, allowing 6 runs on 12 hits for the Pirates. Philadelphia is 8-8 after the defeat.

The Phillies had been locked in a 4-4 tie with the Pirates going into the bottom of the eighth inning. That changed quickly when the two-time All-Star Schoolboy Rowe came to the plate. Rowe hit a 2-run double on a 2-2 knuckleball from Philadelphia hurler Roger Wolff. It was Rowe's 1st double of the year.

"It feels good to get this one," Rowe told the Pittsburgh Bulletin.
