Big Day for Mize as Pirates Down Braves, 8-2
The first-place Pittsburgh Pirates took on the Boston Braves in front of a spirited crowd.

The 8-2 Pittsburgh win over Boston was due largely to Johnny Mize. The Pirates first baseman was 3-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. Johnny Schmitz got credit for the win, improving to 4-1. He allowed 2 runs on 5 hits in 9 innings.

Walker Cooper, who is tied for 5th in the NL with a .345 batting average, took Boston hurler Harry Taylor deep in the bottom of the first. His 2-run home run put the Pirates on top, 2-0. In all, Cooper had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 5.

"I just tried to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Cooper.

The Pirates, now 14-4, have been playing some good baseball.
