Pittsburgh Beats Brooklyn as Schmitz Throws 6-0 Shutout
|
Magic was in the air and on the mound at Forbes Field, as Johnny Schmitz held the Brooklyn Dodgers spellbound in his 6-0 shutout victory. The Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher went the distance, rang up 4 strikeouts, walked 2, and held the Dodgers to 5 hits.
"He just had us in his thrall," Brooklyn manager Leo Durocher said. "We couldn't put anything together against him."
Thus far this season, Schmitz has tossed 50.1 innings in 6 starts, fanned 20 batters, walked 22 and put up a 2.32 ERA with 5 wins and 1 loss.
