The Detroit Tigers defeated the Boston Red Sox, 4-3, at Briggs Stadium. Leading the charge for Detroit was second baseman Johnny Lucadello. He went 4-5 with a double and 3 singles. He drove in 2 runs. Detroit reliever Johnny Gee picked up the win, raising his record to 2-2. Randy Gumpert was tagged with the loss. The Tigers saw their win-loss record go to 21-12. At the same time, the Red Sox fell to 13-21.

Connie Ryan was the walk-off hero for Detroit. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Tigers pinch hitter hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.

"The fans went nuts at the end," Lucadello said.
