The New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Guardians, 7-4, in part because of third baseman Cookie Lavagetto. Lavagetto was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and a walk for the Yankees. Cleveland now owns a losing streak of 7 games.

New York used a clutch at-bat from Ernie Lombardi to capture the win. The catcher hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to put the Yankees ahead, 4-2. It was his lone hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.

"As well as we've been playing, I think we can play even better," said New York manager Joe McCarthy.
