Ernie Lombardi, who won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1938, had a direct impact on the outcome. Lombardi contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put New York up, 4-0.
After the game, New York manager Joe McCarthy applauded the team's effort. "They busted their humps out there," he said.
