No one was more impactful than Vern Stephens in the 7-6 Pittsburgh win over Cincinnati. Stephens, who is tied for 3rd in the NL in triples with 4, went 4-4 with 4 singles and a walk. Pittsburgh reliever Charlie Gassaway was the winner. His record is now 1-3. The losing pitcher was Bill McCahan. Pittsburgh goes to 21-22, Cincinnati to 17-26.

The game was all tied up in the bottom of the eighth, until Stephens delivered big-time for Pittsburgh, stroking a dramatic run-scoring single off Bill McCahan. The game-changing hit put the Pirates on top, 7-6.

"It wasn't our best performance," said Stephens, "but a win in this league is nothing to sniff at."
