Cubs Trip Cardinals, 7-6, in Extra Innings
|
St. Louis got a decent performance from pitcher Fred Hutchinson, but it wasn't enough to beat the Chicago Cubs. Chicago won the Wrigley Field contest, 7-6. Hutchinson threw 8.0 innings of 7-hit ball for the losing team. Red Adams, credited with the win in relief, is now 1-0. He allowed no runs on 2 hits in 2 innings. The Cubs, at 26-16, have now won 4 straight.
Batting in the bottom of the tenth, 31-year old third baseman Chuck Workman had a real shot to win the game. St. Louis pitcher Herman Besse was determined not to let it happen. But with no outs, Workman hit a run-scoring single. The Cubs had a walk-off triumph.
"This is a resilient bunch," said Chicago manager Charlie Grimm.
