New York Loss Tarnishes Fine Game by Kiner
|
The inspired effort of New York center fielder Ralph Kiner was not enough to prevent a loss, 9-4, to the Philadelphia Athletics. Kiner was 3 for 3 with a home run, a triple, a walk, and was hit by a pitch. He scored 2 times and drove in 3. Harry Brecheen got the win, improving to 4-5. He worked 8.2 innings, giving up 4 runs on 9 hits, while striking out 9 and walking 2. Philadelphia now sits at 23-24, while New York falls to 26-20.
Philadelphia relied on the hitting of Paul Richards to pick up the win. The catcher ripped a bases-clearing triple in the top of the first inning to put the Athletics on top, 5-0. For the game, Richards had 1 triple and 1 single in 5 at-bats.
"Solid performance from our side," said Athletics manager Connie Mack.
